## Introduction

Godai is web3 game with the focus on strategy and skill. It is set in the world of martial arts, governed by the principle of the five elements ([*Wuxing / Gogyo*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxing_\(Chinese_philosophy\))). Each user controls a clan of fighters, with which he can compete against other players in several game modes (PvP) or embark on unique quests (PvE).

Each fighter is an NFT that can gradually level up and gain new strengths and abilities to use in battles. The fighters can be rented within the game or freely traded on secondary marketplaces.

The world of Godai offers numerous opportunities for earning rewards. One can win bounties through skirmishes against other players, compete for prestige rewards in grand tournaments or simply rent NFTs to other users in exchange for a fee.

# The lore

## Introduction

In the vast expanse of the Solana multiverse lies a mysterious realm known as Godai. The blockchain vagabonds that have came across it tell stories of a untamed land full of natural wonders and breathtaking beauty. The Godai’s landscape is defined by ancient mountains that stand tall and strong besides the fiery volcanoes that have given rise to the mountain range throughout the eons. In the surrounding valleys one can find lush forests that are teeming with life and provide the energy for the raging fires of the volcanoes above. The forest themselves are nurtured by the pristine rivers and lakes of the land. As the streams make their way down from the mountains in a series of breathtaking waterfalls, they are enriched with esoteric metals that are more precious than gold. It truly is a spectacular harmony of the five elements: **Earth, Fire, Wood, Water and Metal.**

But there is more to Godai than meets the eye. Within the sanctuaries and temples that are scattered across the land lives a thriving community of eager adventurers. They are determined to train their body & mind and master the mystical powers that shape the world of Godai. Countless centuries ago a legendary master, today only known by his honorable title “Grand Sensei”, has discovered a hidden wellspring of energy deep within the abyss of the spiritual realm. This energy, known as "**Chi"**, has the power to transform ordinary individuals into extraordinary martial artists and give them the control over the five elements. The Grand Sensei's teachings have became the foundation for a renowned community of martial artists that call themselves **the Acolytes**.

## The way of an Acolyte

To become a respectful Acolyte, the disciples must devote themselves to a lifelong journey of self-improvement. They train tirelessly under the guidance of wise masters, learning the secrets of combat, the art of focus, and the harmony between the body and mind. From the tranquil gardens of ancient monasteries to the breathtaking waterfalls hidden high in the mountains, these sacred training grounds are where legends are forged.

Acolytes are not just warriors; they are guardians of the commoners. To prove their worthiness, they embark on quests to aid those in need, by protecting villages from marauding bandits and eradicating evil spirits from their hidden lairs. Through these selfless acts, they cultivate not only their strength but also earn **"Taels"**, the common currency of Godai that is invaluable for expediting their training.

Skirmishes and clashes are a rite of passage for any aspiring martial artist. Acolytes test their skills against one another in honorable combat, forging bonds of friendship and respect even in the heat of battle. These encounters are not just tests of martial prowess but also tests of character and honor.

The pinnacle of an Acolyte's journey are the grand martial arts tournament, where the most skilled and disciplined warriors from across the Godai gather to compete. It is here that destinies are decided, rivalries are settled, and champions emerge. The winner not only earns fame and glory but also precious rewards.

## The Sensei's legacy

After the Grand Sensei formulated his teachings he mysteriously disappeared. This brought an era of instability and chaos into the land of Godai. Numerous brave champions have attempted to fill the void, but no single warrior was powerful enough to claim the title of Grand Sensei and restore the balance. Therefore, the Acolytes began joining up into **clans** under the control of knowledgeable and wise men, known as the **Masters**.

Today there exists a myriad of clans and anyone eager to become a Masters can establish a clan of his own. Through this plurality the natural balance is thankfully restored, but it comes at a price. Due to the fierce temperament of warriors and their lust for power, there is a constant competition between the clans. According to the ancient tradition, each season a successor of the Grand Sensei is selected based on the performance of his clan in clashes and tournaments. Winning the title allows the Master and his clan to occupy the Temple of Elements that was established by the Grand Sensei himself. Apart from the ultimate glory, this bestows the clan with boundless riches that have accumulated in the temple's coffers.

## Fighters

The Acolytes are a set of individual fighters and comprise the primary collection of the Godai world. Each fighter comes with a set of traits that determine his predispositions for mastering each of the five elements. The fighters are recruited by Masters who are always on a lookout to expand their clans.

When a fighter joins a clan, he can begin his combat journey. By participating in quests, duels and tournaments he can earn experience points and Taels. The experience points allow him to level-up and unlock new attribute points that can be used to increase the proficiency in the elements of his Master's choice. The Taels can be used to unlock new fighter's skills, redistribute his attribute points or purchase items from the marketplace.

## Arenas

Arenas are sacred battlegrounds within which the duels take place. Each arena comes with a set of traits that determine its affinity towards each of the five elements. While the arenas are static (do not level-up like fighters do), they are invaluable to clans as they enable the fighters to train faster, allow one to start new battles on home ground and provide additional source of income to the Masters.

# Game mechanics

## Overview

In Godai the user is set in the role of clan Masters. Each clan consists of the Acolytes (fighter NFTs), that have been collected by the Master. Even if the Master does not own any of the Acolytes, he can still participate in battles by renting the NFTs from other users, albeit that requires him to pay a small fee to the owner.

The game allows the players to pursue different goals. Depending on the user's preference, he/she can either choose to pursue glory by competing in tournaments or leaderboard competitions, focus on maximizing his earnings in duels, or enjoy the immersive lore through the endless series of unique quests. Furthermore, the users can also chose a passive approach, where they level up their fighters through meditation and/or earn fees by renting them out to other users.

## Game modes

Generally speaking, there are two different main way in which a player can advance in the world of Godai. First option is to actively participate in battles and second one is to progress passively through staking mechanics. The transition between the game modes is seamless and the players can easily adapt their gaming style to the amount of time that they currently have at their disposal.

### Battles

All battles within the game are duels between between two players. Each battle takes place in an arena, which determines the environment and its affinity to various elements. However, there are important differences between various battle type and their rewards. More details can be found in:

{% content-ref url="/pages/vZWTzdlFEIhapY3L8ato" %}
[Battle types](/about/game-mechanics/battle-types)
{% endcontent-ref %}

Upon joining the battle, the user needs to choose the Acolyte he/she wishes to deploy (this can be either their own fighter or one rented from another user). For the selected fighter he/she then needs to specify the **build**, which consists of a **sequence of attacks** and a **set of skills**. Each attack is associated with one of the five elements and it strength is determined by the previous attacks and fighter's attributes. The chosen set of skills augments the attacks when certain criteria are met. More details can be found in:

{% content-ref url="/pages/ImNtZ3gR4LUKmS0VWyFA" %}
[Battle system](/about/game-mechanics/battle-system)
{% endcontent-ref %}

The outcome of each battle is entirely determined by the builds that the users have selected. Therefore, chose wisely and make sure that you use the elements to your advantage!

### Staking

Apart from battles that require active involvement of the user, the game supports also passive game modes, commonly referred to as staking. In Godai users can choose between two types of staking, namely meditation and renting. Meditation allows the clan to accumulate addition Chi and earn experience points for the staked Acolytes, while renting allows the clan Masters to earn through fees by lending the NFTs to other users. # Battle types

The the world of Godai the Masters can deploy their Acolytes in battles of different types. There exist three distinct categories of PvP duels, while one battle type is reserved for PvE.

## 1. Skirmishes (PvP)

This category represent unranked battles that take place in the back alleys of the Godai cities and villages. Due to their illicit nature they do not count towards clan ranking. However, in this battle type the clan Masters can agree on a bounty that will be awarded to the winner. Besides the bounty, the winner also receives some experience points for his fighter.

## 2. Clashes (PvP)

These ranked battles represent the core element of the Acolytes' codex. By competing through clashes the Masters can increase the reputation of their clans, as well as earn significant amount of experience and Taels. However, participating in these artful battles requires large amounts of Chi.

## 3. Tournaments (PvP)

Tournaments represent the highest form of battle in the world of Godai. In order to enter these sacred events the clans must first qualify themselves or come in the possession of an entry ticket. The winners of the tournaments are awarded with unparalleled rewards.

## 4. Quests (PvE)

The Acolytes can embarks on a quest to defeat evil that is troubling the land of Godai. The master must prepare his strategy and equip the fighter based on the unique quest briefing as he sees fit. There are different difficulty levels for the quests and consequently they come with different rewards; the harder the quest, the greater the reward. The majority of the quest rewards are in form of fighter experience points and Taels.

# Battle system

The battles in Godai follow a strict ancient creed. It is based on the fundamental interplay of the five elements and fighters' abilities. While the key notions are easy to grasp, mastering the battle system takes serious dedication and loads of training.

## The Elements

The world of Godai consists of five elements: **Eath, Fire, Wood, Water and Metal.** To become a successful warrior, it is first necessary to understand the nature of each element and master the relations between them.

[The Elements](/about/game-mechanics/battle-system/the-elements)
{% endcontent-ref %}

## Key battle concepts

There are a number of concepts the Masters should understand before engage in battles. Most of them should be familiar, but some might be new:

## Combat rules

Once the Master is familiar with the elements and has learned the key battle concepts, he can start devising his battle strategy according to the combat rules.

# The Elements

## Relations between the elements

First step in becoming a skillful fighter is gaining the knowledge of the five elements and their relations. There exist three possible types of relations between a given pair of elements:

* Dominating (thick black line)
* Overcoming (thin black line)
* Generating (gray line)

<figure><img src="https://4234727223-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F9ZuuYbq63vP6QPQ57RfB%2Fuploads%2Fst2zbHje9PyYAjhJTt4M%2Felements_map_full.png?alt=media&amp;token=d2f851e5-0812-4968-abb9-b2cdf1bd4956" alt=""><figcaption><p>Relations between the five elements. Thick black lines denote <strong>dominating</strong> relation, thin black lines <strong>overcoming</strong> relation, and gray lines denote <strong>generating</strong> relation<strong>.</strong></p></figcaption></figure>

The Acolyte's mastery of a certain element is determined in the number of **attribute points** invested in that element. With each level Acolytes earn additional attribute points that can be spent as their Master sees best fit. The attribute points determine the damage bonus and skill power for the specific element.

### Actions and the Elements&#x20;

Each element has an associated **action** that the fighters can perform during the battle to deal damage to the opponent:

* Earth -> Punch
* Fire -> Kick
* Wood -> Block
* Water -> Sweep
* Metal -> Charge

### Elemental bonuses

Additionally, each element is associated with specific **bonus**:

* Earth -> Bonus health (+1 max HP per attribute level)
* Fire -> Bonus physical damage (+0.06 base physical damage per attribute level)
* Wood -> Bonus heal (+0.1 HP heal per turn per attribute level)
* Water -> Bonus defense (+0.2 physical damage reduction per attribute level)
* Metal -> Bonus focus (+0.1 base FP per turn per attribute level)

# Key battle concepts

## Health points (HP)

Health points represent the vitality of a fighters. The goal of each battle is to bring the opponents HP as low as possible, as the fighter with the highest HP at the end of the battle wins. Fighters reduce the opponent's HP by dealing damage.

## Focus points (FP)

Focus points represent the concentration of the fighter and his ability to use skills. Every turn each fighter gains the base amount of FP and possibly additional FP stemming from energizing hits or skill effects. The gained FP is cumulatively added to the fighters skills until they become ready for use.

## Actions

Before entering a battle, the fighter must be assigned a **build**. The first part of the build consists of a sequence of actions that the fighter will follow in a given match. Each action corresponds to one of the elements. The relations between the corresponding elements determines the outcome of each battle turn.

## Skills

The second part of the fighter's build consists of skills. Each skills has it's own **focus cost** and **cooldown**, which determine how much FP is needed to activate the skill and how long will it take for the skill to become available again after successful activation. Each skill keeps track of the accumulated FP separately, so that if one skill is activated its FP resets to 0, while other skills remain charged with whatever FP they have accumulated. The skills that are on cooldown do not accumulate FP.

The skills are activated only when they are full charged (i.e. have accumulated sufficient FP) and the fighter lends a successful attack. If the fighter has multiple charged skills the first (i.e. left-most) skill is activated, while others remain unaffected.

The skills can have a variety of effects. Based on their duration, they are grouped in 3 categories:

* **Instants**: the effect is applied instantaneously
* **(De-)Buffs**: the effect lasts for a given number of turns (max. 3 buffs at the time, no limit for debuffs)
* **Stances**: the effect is triggered at some later point when the specific conditions are fulfilled (max. 1 stance at a time).

According to the effect type, the skills can be grouped in the following categories:

* **Physical damage:** basic damage dealt by the attacks
* **Elemental damage:** special damage corresponding to one of the elements
* **Physical defense:** defense against physical damage
* **Elemental defense:** defense against elemental damage
* **Heal:** restoration of fighter's HP
* **Reflection:** redirect physical damage back to the opponent
* **Lifesteal:** special damage that heals the fighter for an amount equal to the damage dealt
* **Focus:** provides additional FP
* **Focus loss:** reduces the FP gain
* **Remove stance:** removes a stance
* **Remove (de)buffs:** removes a given number of buffs or debuffs

## Counters

Counters are the temporary boosts that the fighters accumulate by performing actions. Each action generates one counter according to the **generating** relation between the elements (e.g. kick, belonging to the fire elements, generates an earth counter). The counters provide a boost in the damage (+50% physical damage per counter) and focus gain (+20% FP per counter) from successful attacks of the corresponding element. The counters last for three turns and are stackable.

# Combat rules

The combat between the fighters proceeds in turns. There is a maximum of 12 turns, but the battle can end prematurely if the HP of one of the fighters reaches 0. The winning fighter is the one with the higher renaming HP at the end of the battle.

Every turn of the battle each of the two fighters attacks with an action selected for that turn. The outcome of the turn is determined on the basis of the relation of the elements corresponding to the selected attacks. There are three possible outcomes:

* **Critical hit**: fighter with the **dominating** element deals 2x base damage to the opponent
* **Energizing hit**: fighter with **overcoming** element deals 1x base damage to the opponent and receives 2x base FP
* **Stalemate**: both fighters selected the same action, in which case no damage is dealt, but they both gain the base FP

The fighter that scores a hit against his opponent also activates a skill if one is available (if any of the skill is fully charged, i.e. has accumulated the required amount of FP). If multiple skills are available the first (i.e. left-most) one is selected.

# Staking

Actively engaging in battles offers the fastest way for Masters to earn glory and riches. However, there exists also another path, more suitable for those who wish to grow while being absent from the realm of Godai. This is enabled either by entering a deep state of meditation or renting out your NFTs to other users.

## Meditation

Meditation allows Acolytes to earn experience points and Chi over time. While being in the state of meditation they can not participate in battles or be rented to other players. Furthermore, entering the state of meditation requires certain **warmup** time, while upon exiting the state of meditation the fighter can not enter meditation again until the **cooldown** period has elapsed. However, the meditation rewards can be collected without the fighter leaving the meditation state.

## Renting

Renting allows a Master to passively earn fees from other users by providing them access to his/her NFTs. The fee rates (minimum fee and bounty percentage) are determined by the Master. The fees are paid by the user borrowing an NFT and can be claimed by the owner once the battle has finished. Additionally, the Acolytes that are borrowed and take part in battles earn 10% of the experience points that they would earn if they entered the battle with their own Master. While the NFTs are rented they can not be used for battles or enter meditation.
